History in the making
2nd May. All students were transported to Prosperous Plain to observe the arrival and overflights of a Hercules C130 aircraft. This is the first fixed wing aircraft which has visited the island during the lifetime of the students. The flight was arranged by the St Helena Air Access Project in order that the proposed runway alignment of St Helena's proposed airport could be checked aerially. The weather was not brilliant, with low cloud and light drizzle. The aircraft arrived at St Helena at about 11:00 and continued manoeuvres for about an hour before returning to Namibia. Younger students were excited to be witnessing the start of this historical event which hopefully will culminate in the completion of the airport in 2010.
